The craniosacral system consists of structures that work together in your head and spine. Throughout this system you have cerebrospinal fluid which acts as a cushion around the brain and spinal cord.
This fluid flows from the center of your brain down to the bottom of your spinal cord in your sacrum.
The work that I do is based upon the work of Dr. John Upledger. In 1970 he noticed that the craniosacral system had a rhythm that was different than the rhythm of our circulatory (pulse) and respiratory (breathing) systems.
Movement in the craniosacral system could not be explained by his peers or medical literature at the time. This began Dr. Upledger's research into the subject which eventually led him to CranioSacral Therapy.
Dr. Upledger found that the craniosacral system responded best to very light touch – just 5 grams of pressure or the weight of a nickel – was the optimal amount. The touch is light enough to prevent the body from involuntarily responding with a counter action.
The most common reason that you could want CranioSacral Therapy is that your body has been through some sort of trauma from which it is not able to heal on its own.
Our bodies are very gifted at healing themselves and are certainly not fragile, but they also were not designed to withstand the forces of a car crash at 40 miles per hour or similar traumas.
CranioSacral Therapy can help to restore the balance to your craniosacral system which allows your body to heal itself more effectively. This treatment increases the flow of cerebrospinal fluid throughout your brain and spinal cord and improves mobility, body symmetry, pain conditions, energy level, cognitive abilities, sleep, depression, and creates a strong sense of well being.
CranioSacral Therapy is safe and great for children and pregnant women.
